Berenice Villagómez, former doctoral student from our Department, and Professor Néstor Rodríguez announced the publication of El hermano definidor by Pedro Henríquez Ureña. The volume is a collection of essays on Mexican cultural history organized by the Dominican scholar. Villágomez and Rodríguez unearthed the manuscript while examining Henríquez Ureña’s personal papers at El Colegio de México as part of a SSHRC-funded project.

Professor Laura Colantoni collaborates in an ongoing project, directed by Professor Alexei Kochetov, entitled "A multilingual corpus of articulatory kinematic data for interdisciplinary speech production research".

The Department announces its linguistics lab, shared with the French Department (Carr Hall 326). The lab is equipped with recording equipment and several computers with software for phonetic analysis.

The Department is awarded a Curriculum Development Fund for a project entitled "Language variation and its cultural representations across the Spanish curriculum". The application was led by Professor Laura Colantoni and carried out by Professors Susan Antebi, Josiah Blackmore, Cristina Cuervo, Iván Fernández, Yolanda Iglesias, Manuel Ramírez, Ana Pérez-Leroux and Rosa Sarabia.

Professor Robert Davidson receives a Jackman Faculty Research Fellowship for 2012-13. Prof. Davidson will be a Fellow in residence, working on the project "The Taste of a Country: Land, Identity, and Terroir in Catalonia."

Joanne Markle LaMontagne wins the 2011 Canadian Linguistic Association (CLA) competition for best student poster at the CLA's annual meeting. The poster was entitled "Acquisition of the Spanish Present Perfect by Spanish-English Bilinguals".

Professor Susan Antebi receives a Connaught New Researcher Award of $10,000. She will use it to conduct research for her second book; the title of the project is: "Eugenics and intercorporeality: Reading disability in twentieth century Mexican cultural production."

Professor Eva-Lynn Jagoe is awarded a Chancellor Jackman Research Fellowship in the Humanities for 2011-12.  As a Jackman Research Fellow, Prof. Jagoe will pursue a project titled "Too Much: The Time of Reading, the Time of Psychoanalysis."
