Description

Collocations are natural combinations of words that regularly occur together in a language and are acquired through repeated use rather than through fixed grammatical rules. They play a key role in shaping what sounds natural in speech and writing and vary significantly across languages.

The talk introduces the Dizionario delle collocazioni, a reference tool designed to support effective word choice in Italian. The third edition, expanded to include approximately 240,000 collocations, reflects contemporary language use and promotes inclusive expression. The structure of the dictionary and its practical applications will be examined through selected examples, highlighting its role in enhancing lexical development, fluency, and idiomatic competence.

Paola Tiberii is a lexicographer, translator, and musicologist. She is the author of the Dizionario delle collocazioni published by Zanichelli, a comprehensive reference work on Italian word combinations. She is regularly invited by universities and cultural institutions to deliver lectures, lead workshops, and conduct seminars on a range of topics, including musicology, language interaction, lexical competence, and innovative methods in foreign language teaching.
