The Latin American Studies program welcomes students from the social sciences, humanities and sciences to explore their interests and expand their expertise in the regions through the following opportunities for funding their research and comunity engagement:

 


Latin American Studies Call for Fellows 2024-25

Deadline for applications: Monday, September 16, 2024.

Latin American Studies Undergraduate Fellowship Award, 2024-25

Open to all undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto who have completed at least 14 FCEs toward their degree by the end of the Summer 2024. Valued at $1,000.00 CAD and valid for one full academic year (September 2024 – May 2025). LAS Undergraduate Fellows will be expected to participate in public engagement through a project to be shared on the Department of Spanish & Portuguese website and social media channels, aimed at students at the University of Toronto and the larger intellectual community at Latin American Studies.

Latin American Studies Graduate Fellowship Award, 2024-25

Open to Arts & Science PhD students at the University of Toronto who are in the writing stage of their dissertation. Valued at $1,000.00 CAD and valid for one full academic year (September 2024 – May 2025). LAS Graduate Fellows will be expected to engage with students and the larger intellectual community at Latin American Studies. They will give a presentation related to their research and will also contribute a workshop for undergraduate students on a topic of interest, mutually agreed with the Associate Chair of Latin American Studies.

Latin American Studies Engagement Award 2024-25

Applications will be reviewed and adjudicated on a rolling basis, with a final submission deadline of January 31, 2025. Please note that the event should occur before April 30, 2025.

Open to all undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science, graduate students enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies, and student groups recognized by ULife. This award provides support (in-kind and up to $500.00 CAD) for the organization of an event focused on issues related to Latin America or its diasporas, and whose primary audience is undergraduate students at the University of Toronto.

Latin American Studies Undergraduate Research Award 2024

We anticipate opening the next Call for Application in the mid-January 2025 with a deadline for early March 2025.

This award for student projects in Latin America aims to recognize primary research and field experience as the foundation for understanding Latin American regions and Canada’s place in the hemisphere. Student(s) will receive up to $2,500 to pursue a project in Latin America.

The award is open to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto, who have a minimum of 10.0 credits and no more than 18.0 credits completed. The award aims to support exceptionally qualified and committed undergraduate students who want to engage in bold, innovative projects in the region. Priority shall be given to students enrolled in a Major or Minor in Latin American Studies. Applicants are asked to propose a project that is likely to increase their commitment toward, and knowledge of, Latin America. The project should be completed sometime between May 1 and December 31, 2024. It is permitted to propose a project you would pursue while engaged in a study abroad or internship programme, but this is not required.
