Nesta breve comunicação, Itamar Vieira Junior realiza uma leitura do seu romance Torto Arado à luz do pensamento decolonial de Malcom Ferdinand e Antônio Bispo dos Santos. Temas como o colonialismo e a escravidão, e as consequências destes eventos muito tempo depois, confluem para os aspectos estéticos da narrativa literária e iluminam uma compreensão diversa do nosso presente.
Sobre o apresentador
Itamar Vieira Junior nasceu em 1979 em Salvador, Bahia. É geógrafo e doutor em Estudos Étnicos e Africanos pela UFBA, Universidade Federal da Bahia. Como escritor, em 2018, ganhou o Prémio Leya de Portugal por Torto arado. O romance, best-seller no Brasil e elogiado pela crítica, ganhou o mais prestigiado prêmio literário do Brasil, o Jabuti, além do Prêmio Oceanos. Itamar Vieira Junior também foi finalista do Jabuti com seu livro de contos A Oração do Carrasco. A versão em inglês de Torto arado -- Crooked Plow -- foi traduzida por Johnny Lorenz e publicada em 2023 pela Verso. Itamar Vieira Junior publicou recentemente seu aguardado segundo romance, Salvar o fogo.

About the Presentation
In this presentation, Itamar Vieira Junior relates his novel Torto Arado in light of the decolonial thought of Malcom Ferdinand and Antônio Bispo dos Santos. Topics such as colonialism and slavery and its consequences over time converge aesthetically to create a literary narrative that enlightens a better understanding of our present. Torto Arado was translated into English by Johnny Lorenz as Crooked Plow, published by Verso Books in 2023.
About the Presenter
Itamar Vieira Junior was born in 1979 in Salvador, Bahia. He is geographer and has a PhD in Ethnic and African Studies from UFBA, the Federal University of Bahia. As an author, he won Portugal’s Leya Prize for Torto arado in 2018. The novel, a best-seller in Brazil and praised by critics, went on to win Brazil’s most prestigious literary award, the Jabuti, as well as the Oceanos Prize. Itamar Vieira Junior was also a finalist for the Jabuti for his book of short stories, The Executioner’s Prayer. Itamar Vieira Junior has recently published his highly anticipated second novel, Salvar o fogo.
